So packaging is a serious business at Nissan. This car has thrown out the design rules for the sake of airflow through the body. How much? Check out the engine sitting among the neighboring ducts? It’s like they superglued the turbos to the valve covers.

Kinja'd!!!

Where did the exhaust manifolds go exactly? How tortured is their shape? Wowza. How about driver comfort? or total lack of it? Your feet are roughly even with your forehead to make space for the 52000 rpm flywheel.

Kinja'd!!!

I know this is not really unusual in modern racecars, but without the dash in place, you can really see how high the driver’s feet sit. My feet are asleep just thinking about it too hard. Also, note that while this year’s car is not AWD, the tube for the rear drive shaft is in place. This car is clearly off pace this year, but winter testing.... I’m excited to see how this pans out.

I don’t care how fast it is, it’s insane and that’s what matters!

The AWD bit confuses me. I thought that the ICE has to drive two wheels, and that the only way to do 4WD within the rules was to have the other two powered by the electric motor, but that if the powered wheels are different, the electric motors could only kick in above 120 kph. So, why a driveshaft, or am I misreading the rules? I think that the flywheel option is a mistake. Everyone who has tried it in various series ended up switching to either a supercapacitor or regular batteries.

NO electric in this car. All power is engine power or mechanical energy stored in the flywheel. This year, they will only be powering the front wheels. But they original intent is an AWD car. There was just too much development to bite off so they skipped AWD for this season.

When AWD does get here, the power will go from the front-mounted transaxle, under the cabin, to a differential that is in the upper part of the rear deck (the drive-shafts will be tortured, too). Then the half-shaft will go to the top of each rear suspension where it will meet a ported axle that sends power (down) to the wheel. Why the ported axle? To keep the half shafts up at the top of the flow-thru ducts, of course. Because this entire car exists just for those ducts. If the half shafts came right through the middle of the duct, they would disturb the airflow. Ben just won’t have it.

Also bear in mind that the AWD on this is really just to rocket out of the corners (which is where the GTR is struggling right now). When you get to top end straights, they really want this to be a slippery FWD monster.

I was wrong on one detail. The rear wheels will only be driven by the KERS unit, as shown by this highly technical drawing. Don’t feel bad if this is too ‘engineerie’ for you. LOL. Gotta love the quickness of Microsoft Paint sometimes.

That makes more sense.
